It is a book on historiography that develops the idea that â€Å"facts alone do not constitute history† but that these need to be interpreted and ably written. Writing   should consist an effort on the writer to communicate as close as possible his   own ideas to the reader. It gives a very convenient outline summary for all the great philosophical systems  Ã‚   that influenced historians and their writings. This background could further enhance an understanding of historians’ very human tendency to reduce patterns into ‘laws’ in order to make them coherent and unified. However, such laws overly simplify   phenomenon and , if possible, should be avoided by the writer. Barzun convincingly provides strong bases for his ‘principles’ through excellent  Ã‚  Ã‚   choice of examples. An anecdote on how a historian was able to establish the authorship of the â€Å"Diary of a Public Man† is such a good example on how   one investigates and verifies his data. This historian was able to come up with a  Ã‚  Ã‚   probable answer to his problem through trial and error that took him more than thirty years- visiting libraries, interviewing key people mentioned in the diary, verifying documents written during the period in question (Lincoln Administration). In the end the historian found out that the author employed both fact and fiction in his diary entry and therefore   this (diary)   would not be useful as a historical document. Another is about a researcher who investigated the origin of the motto: â€Å"In God We Trust† written on dollar currencies. He noticed that there was a period when such a motto was absent,   and he wanted to investigate, first -its origin and then,   the reason   for its absence; then, its revival in the present currencies. Through painstaking investigation he found out that it was Stuart Chase, the Secretary of Treasury who , being a clergyman, mandated its inclusion on all currencies during his incumbency. When his term expired, his successor had this motto deleted only to reappear later when the American Congress saw the wisdom of restoring it. Such examples on the process of research reinforces the idea that research is a worthy endeavor and   is indeed exciting. Moroever, the book stresses on the importance of having the proper perspective in writing history, i.e. â€Å"Book concentrates on principles of thought and analysis of difficulties and aims at imparting the fundamentals of informed exposition.† The authors repeatedly expounds on these throughout the book. Another important tenet which Barzun convinces his reader is that it is by way of probability that all scholars, including scientists can claim the truthfulness of their work. Thus, patterning in history is intended not to arrive at â€Å"laws† or generalizations that are â€Å"unbreakable† and immutable but rather to serve as guidepost that may give coherence to an ,otherwise, confusing motley of data. They are therefore made for convenience, just as periodizations in history are. The menacing issue on subjectivity and objectivity in historical writing was given adequate attention by Barzun. He avers that   these words apply â€Å"not to persons and opinions but rather to sensations and judgments† and are better avoided by historians and their critics. â€Å"An objective judgment is one made by testing in all ways possible one’s subjective impressions, so as to arrive at a knowledge of subjects.† A corollary principle will be that â€Å"competence, not majority opinion, is decisive. There have been collective hallucinations that deceived large majorities’† (p.166). This obviously happens, specially with political issues and with politicians who exploit public opinion to suit their ends. Analysis: Barzun Graff’s Modern Researcher is, indeed, not an ordinary manual on research and writing. But I have only one comment, why did they entitle the book â€Å"The Modern Researcher†? Nowhere in this book did they explain the title. Does the word â€Å"modern† means a historical period? Or a frame of mind? Think Youre Done Editing Take a Step Back.

THINK YOURE DONE EDITING? TAKE A STEP BACK. A writer’s work is never done. When you’re writing, you can get so wrapped up in the proofreading and editing process that you miss a HUGE oversight or error in your copy. This goes for all writing – whether it’s a marketing letter, a web page, or a novel. So, when you think you’re done writing and editing and proofreading everything, you’ve got one more milestone to go: Take a step back and examine your work from the 50-thousand foot level. Now isn’t the time to get bogged down by periods and commas; you need to look at the big picture. Check your work for consistency and make sure you address some of these issues: †¢ Does the organization need any work? Your copy should flow logically from Point A to Point B. Make sure you’re not missing any steps and that you have strong links connecting each and every paragraph. †¢ Have you effectively addressed your reader? You need to make it clear that your reader knows that you have exactly what he wants. This means that all of the features of your product or service need to have a clearly outlined benefit to the reader (see our previous blog about benefits). †¢ Do your differentiators stand out? Be vigilant about making your company’s vital information clear and easy to understand – all of your paragraphs should lead off with a differentiator, and the first paragraph especially should explain and summarize to the reader why they can’t live without your product or service. †¢ Are there any logical errors? It can be easy to skip over vital information about something that you know very well – after all, you’re an expert on your company. Double check all of your explanations for clarity, making sure to spell out simply and concisely every aspect of your company (even if you think it’s silly, it could answer a reader’s question). So, how can you ensure that your copy passes the 50-thousand foot level test? A few strategies to try: †¢ Give yourself some distance. Step away from the computer for a few hours and let your mind relax. Come back to your copy in the morning with a fresh set of eyes. †¢ Let someone else read it. Don’t give it to your mom or your closest co-worker: Try to pick someone who can give you an honest opinion, and preferably someone who doesn’t know anything about your product, service, company, or idea. Listen to any questions they may have or sources of any confusion – this is valuable information to a writer! †¢ Print it out. Everything looks different on paper than it does on a screen. The first option is to try to increase retention by developing programs targeted at kids over 14. His pros would be that he already has resources in place. The company image has a very good reputation as well. Henning’s soccer training business is one of the few companies providing soccer training. The con would be loss of interest in soccer. Soccer in America is the least popular sport in America. Baseball, football, and basketball are more wildly popular with teenagers. The second option is to develop a marketing strategy that would encourage his current customers to buy more. The pro in getting current customers to buy more would be customer retention and more revenue stream without entering into other markets. Henning could focus more attention on his current customers. The con would be missed opportunities in other markets. The third option is to try and grow the business by entering new markets and acquiring new customers in the age range of 6 to 9 years old. Option 4 is to serve more kids from Loveland, Longmont, and Greeley. It is the strongest because Henning is already serving a few kids from those areas. The population combined is higher than Fort Collins. Soccer training is limited in the area. He would have more opportunities to advertise his business at soccer events in the local area. Option 2 is to develop a marketing strategy that would encourage his current customers to buy more. It is the second most attractive in that he already has a strong customer base. Product development in this area could retain customers and attract new customers. Option 1 is to retain kids that reach the age of 14 or 15 years. It is a weaker option because it focuses too much on the older kids and Henning will have to compete with other sports. Rocky soccer academy is well established in Fort Collins and has a great reputation in the community. Many of its customers from Fort Collins compete locally and all over the nation. Some have gone on to win national titles. Great coaching from Henning and his staff has produced positive results. All of these factors I felt were strengths. In the surrounding areas of Loveland, Longmont, And Greeley there is very little soccer training in the areas. With very little soccer training in the area, a good opportunity presented itself. The populations combined are 140,000. The population in Fort Collins is 110,000 and about 600 kids in that population acquire soccer training. From the surrounding areas Henning could possibly gain close to 600 more kids. If Henning were to gain more customers from the surrounding areas, it would justify building a larger facility. I chose to have the facility in Fort Collins. By having the facility located in Fort Collins this could turn away potential customers, making the location a weakness. To make acquiring Rocky soccer academy services more attractive, Henning could offer a one week trial free of charge and a 20 percent discount for 6 months. During the free trial period Henning can show with his coaching staff what differentiates his company from other alternatives. This would be the opportunity to sell Rocky soccer academies services, which should result in more customers. The second option I chose was option 2. Henning’s target market is current customers. I decided that he should offer a physical conditioning program that is tailored for soccer players to go along with soccer training. The added equipment needed to run this new program would justify building a larger facility. The larger facility will be built in Fort Collins. His reputation and his coaching staff are all strengths. A weakness I saw was the current customers may not see much of a point in conditioning. To alleviate some of those concerns a special promotion is needed. The first two weeks of the program would be free, giving customers an opportunity to see if they improved on the field. For those who choose to take part in the conditioning program a price increased will occur and they will have special privileges like use of a hot tub.
